One of my very favorite authors recommended I read Ms. Ellison's books so here I am. When I started this novel, it was really slow and I had trouble sticking with it. I had already read one of her Sarah Medical Examiner books so I came back to the beginning. I'm glad I stuck with it because halfway through, the book got exciting and suspenseful. Taylor and John are a great couple and I'm pretty sure I'm going to stick with this series. On to the next...

All The Pretty Girls A Taylor Jackson Novel J T Ellison Books Reviews

Like a songwriter who writes his chorus before he discovers his verse, I rarely ever start a mystery/thriller series at the beginning. ALL THE PRETTY GIRLS is no exception to this rule; however, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed J.T. Ellison's debut novel. Sure, it's easy to make the argument that this book was a bit formulaic at times, but unless you write literary fiction, what book isn't? With only 20 plots (or 3 or 7 or 36, depending on whom you ask) to work with, it's not like authors have an abundance of choices out there. What it really boils down to is character and storytelling ability. And I'd say Ms. Ellison has both in spades.

Lieutenant Taylor Jackson and Dr. John Baldwin made the story interesting for me, even if they weren't quite fully-formed, and I gathered pages the way a squirrel might gather nuts. I was suspended and dangling, although I still had a firm grip on reality.

Even as I reached the end, I found myself wanting more, of these characters and of this city. But I didn't find myself craving more dead bodies. All-in-all I'll be interested to see where this series goes next.

It's not hard to see why J.T. Ellison is such a popular writer. Solid prose, action that propels the story from one page to the next, a strong, empathetic and likable heroine, all salted with just the right touch of romance make ALL THE PRETTY GIRLS another terrific entry in the Taylor Jackson thriller series.

Here Jackson is drawn into a serial murder case from a number of different directions. Taylor went to school with the TV news reporter who's in contact with the killer and the reporter's twin sister; John Baldwin, her romantic interest, is called in as the FBI profiler in the case; and one of the bodies shows up in Nashville. She's also in charge of the investigation of a rape of a fellow officer by a serial rapist. On top of all that, Taylor gets a personal scare when her doctor calls to tell her she's pregnant, an eventuality Taylor hadn't even considered and one that could threaten her nascent relationship.

Ellison handles all these disparate threads like the master weaver she is, slowly constructing a tapestry that shows off Taylor's professional skills and toughness as a cop and her softer personal side, and does so seemingly without effort. This is good stuff. I'll be back for more helpings.
This was pretty good. As a retired Police Investigative Supervisor I tend to nit pick these types of novels. I only found one glaring omission in procedure that a good investigator would not have made and a couple smaller ones. The author kept the identity of the villain hidden very well, (having to do that is what caused the glaring error I mentioned). I also liked that the author covered the mental toll on the investigators. I would have read this straight through if I had the free time. I'll certainly read other books by this author.
I've had Miss Ellison's book on my To Be Read shelf for awhile; now that I've finished it, I am kicking myself for having waited so long to get to it!

The first in a series of novel featuring Nashville homicide detective Taylor Jackson, “All the Pretty Girls” features a protagonist who is both a police officer and a human being – the two aspects of her character never stray far from each other. Her humanity shines through in official situations, while the cop in her is never far away during interpersonal times.

PLUS – this is one of the few Procedurals that I have read that actually takes into account that squads and their team members typically have more than one case at a time to concentrate on.

I already have the second book in the series “14”, and am looking forward to it.

RATING 4 1/2 stars, rounded up to 5 stars. It kept my interest and it's stayed with me even after I've picked up (and finished) a subsequent novel.
Some of he characters are more developed than others. But unfortunately the main character Taylor Jackson is undeveloped, unoriginal and flat.
The same ole same ole cookie cutter suspense novel. However, the story did have a lot of moving parts and the author did an admirable job weaving the parts together. But, some of the information was almost like an after thought just to add pages which could have been left out and wound not have had a negative impact on the novel what's so ever.

The main plot was very good and well development about a serial murderer. Which half way through the novel, the same information became mundane and boring. And the reader knows who the murderer is and pretty much why he's doing it.
If a 100 or so pages had been deleted it would have been a more exciting book.
Excellent police procedural. The beginning was a little slow but it picked up. In some places it felt like there was too much going on. A subplot involving a serial rapist seemed redundant to me. It contributed nothing to the story line and only peripherally involved characters from the main story.

The main story is about Taylor Jackson and her FBI boyfriend trying to solve the case of a serial killer operating in the southern states that removes the hands of his victims and places one of the hands near the next victim in another state. Meanwhile a news reporter is being sent poetry that corresponds to poems left in the vicinity of the victims abductions.
