Wyatt Earp Frontier Marshal Stuart Lake 9780671885373 Books

This is a worshipful view of Wyatt Earp with a lot of his information delivered directly to the author. Written with a great deal of Wyatt Earp's perspective, it idolizes the subject, but makes for good reading. It has to be taken with a grain of salt. In giving his stories and perspective, it covers a great deal of the Old Wild West; he lived it all. Because it begins with his family's journey to California in the 1860's, you get a very long look at forgotten history. Wyatt's life is in effect a recapitulation of The West from setting out in a wagon train to the early 1900's and California's evolution. As Bat Masterson put it, "The true story of the Old West can never be told. The only person who could tell it is Wyatt Earp and he's not talking." Thankfully he did tell it to Stuart Lake. Too bad he left out how bad he really was. For that, you have to go the newer book by Casey Tefertiller 'Wyatt Earp: The Life Behind the Legend'. Wyatt Earp is the central figure who embodies the Old West experience.

Wyatt Earp Frontier Marshal Stuart Lake 9780671885373 Books Reviews

Given everything I've read about this book I was very pleasantly surprised by the quality and veracity of the narrative. I can understand how earlier reviewers taking Lake's claim to have received 100% of his facts from Earp, only from Earp, and entirely from Earp might have prejudiced people against Wyatt Earp, because there is a certain amount of "The tall lean figure of the fearless . . . " etc. The introduction puts this into context excellently well and I have no hesitation in recommending this book to people who are interested in the man and his era, with the proviso that they also read other texts (Sadie is referred two once or twice, never by name, during the portion of the narrative that covers Tombstone; Earp's marriage to and subsequent life with Josie (Sadie) Marcus Earp turns up only in the very last chapter -- on the next-to-last page, if I recall correctly). An excellent summarization of the Wyatt Earp mythos -- perhaps obviously so, since it is created with in large part creating that mythos (g). Still and all, not a book to be scorned, but to be read with a cross-reference or two at hand. The prose style holds up very well indeed.
I believe I was born 100 years too late. I believe in a past life that I lived in the Western United States. I have been to Arizona several times in my life and every time I have been to Arizona I get this feeling of Deja Vu in that I had been there before. In February of 2013 I made my most recent trip to Arizona and this time I traveled to Tombstone. It was an amazing experience is all I can say. To walk the same areas that Wyatt Earp, his brothers and Doc Holiday walked was amazing. I can't wait to go back.
This book by Stuart Lake was an awesome eye opening account into the life of Wyatt in Wichita, Dodge City and Tombstone. I never knew that throughout his whole life as an lawman did Wyatt never suffer any kind of wound from all his shootouts with cattlemen cowboys or outright outlaws. I truly believe that the hand of providence was on his side at all times.
Being that Stuart Lake was the only person to be given the first hand account of his life by Wyatt Earp in the late 1920's makes this book a true account of what actually happened during Wyatt's life as a lawman. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in what life was like on the frontier.
Excellent reading. If it's fact or fiction, no matter, I enjoyed reading this novel.. by Stuart N. Lake Information taken from this book.
Wyatt Earp; Frontier Marshal by Stuart N. Lake With a New Foreword by Loren D. Estleman copyright 1931 copyright July 1994
The Only authorized biography of the legendary man who inspired two of this year's biggest movie events!
"No man could have a more loyal friend than Wyatt Earp might be, nor a more dangerous enemy." Bat Masterson
Wyatt Earp was the greatest gun-fighting marshal of the Old West , and in his time he was branded both a hero-and a killer. With his brothers Morgan and Virgil, and sidekick Doc Holliday, Wyatt Earp brought law and order to frontier outposts of Wichita, Dodge City and Tombstone. He went mano a mano with the era's most notorious outlaws, but he always said he never shot a man he didn't have to. Today's he stands for wild adventure, reckless courage, and forty-five caliber justice of America's cowboy days.
" Earp never hunted trouble, but he was ready for any that came his way." Jimmy Cairns , deputy marshal, Wichita, Kansas . This Classic, authorized biography brings you the spellbinding account of Wyatt Earp's life-in his own words-from buffalo hunting days to the bloody shoot-out at the OK Corral. As searing as hot lead from cold steel, this suspense-filled story of a fearless man who strapped on a six-shooter, put on a badge and tamed the West. Loren D. Estleman..

I read this book I'd give it 5 stars because it held my attention I could not put it down. Wyatt Earp Died 13 January 1929 before Stuart Lake could get all his information to write his book. After Wyatt died Mr lake had serveral meetings with Jose Earp and thus you have a story( Jose Earps' Story). Mattie Earp was left out of the picture but that didn't take away from the book. If you really want to know Wyatt Earp get Casey Terfertillers' book he got the straight of it. But all in all this book is very good and entertaining. I read it twice.

While this book was the only biography ever written and authorized by Wyatt Earp, there are parts of it that over the years have become open to question, as far as fact. That said it's a very good read, and more factual than most similar books, that amount to not much more than western fantasy and folklore. Be careful when purchasing copies of this book. Prices are all over the map. From just a few dollars for a paperback version in good condition, like I purchased, to over $200.00 for a new hardcover copy.
