Hard As It Gets was the first book in the Hard Ink series by Laura Kaye. I had read Kaye’s Blasphemy series where it referenced several characters from Hard Ink and couldn’t wait to dive into this series as well!

Nick Rixey was former Special Forces. He had been out for a year after half his team was taken out in an ambush. He was bitter and still had physical reminders daily of his loss.

Becca Merritt was an Emergency room nurse and the daughter of the Commander that Nick served under. She had a younger brother that she believed was missing and was led to Nick’s door.

Hard As It Gets had a suspenseful vibe. Although a few stories merged together, in addition to the relationship development, the entire storyline focused around discovering who was behind death, kidnapping and betrayal. It was well written, well developed, complex, captivating, intriguing and full of depth and dimension.

I loved the background and all of the characters. Kaye brought in each of the secondary characters that will be central to the series and set the stage well. Although Hard As It Gets brought closure to Nick and Becca’s relationship, the underlying story was just beginning and will continue throughout each book of the series. Shane is up next in Hard As You Can and I can’t wait!

The story ends on somewhat of a cliff-hanger as the ongoing conspiracy has yet to unravel, but otherwise left me completely satisfied with the hero/heroine's HEA.
I write a lot of recommendations for friends, but I write very few reviews. and whether a recommendation or review, I almost never give a 5 Star. Over the last few years I have come to distrust 5 Star reviews, and have been disappointed more times than not. That was not the case with this book. This is a rare find with absolutely nothing I could see to criticize. The writing is superb, the plotting is flawless and the formatting and editing are perfect. Rare indeed.

In this story we have a true action, adventure romance. We have characters who seem real, dealing with a situation that slowly evolves from a minor missing brother into a full scale chain of unfolding events that has us sitting on the edge of the chair wondering what might happen next and hoping for the best.

We have sexual tension between the male and female leads as they try to unravel the mystery of her missing brother. Sexual tension that slowly becomes more. A lot more, with just enough steam to connect us to the characters while they connect to each other---a special talent for a writer.

We have a cast of supporting characters that become more important and more identifiable as the author weaves her story for us.

In short, this story has everything fans of mystery, suspense, action romances could want. Everything!

I am not a facebook friend of the author and have had no contact with her. At. All. So, trust me on this one. I have pre-ordered the second book in this amazing story, As Hard As You Can, and have made Laura Kaye a "collection" on my kindle.
